Well it is that time of year again!! The kids are back in school!! And we like to prepare them for a strong school year of academic learning but as parents what is our role in the upcoming school year? This school year is very emotional for me. I’ve got one in his senior year and preparing for college. One in her freshman year of high school. One in the 7th grade now fully a pre-teen and one starting her academic career in kindergarten. So let’s deal with the obvious I’m all over the place at every level of academia! But once I’ve gotten past all of that (because I’m still dealing with it all) I have got some serious work to do!
In preparing for each academic year we try to talk and prepare our kids for the year ahead. I went the extra mile so all summer they had to read books and write current events during their summer vacation. Since my youngest was entering kindergarten I asked the (“Bigs” as I call them) to teach her phonics and her alphabet. Well since she’s one smart cookie by the end of the summer she was reading words and doing basic addition problems. The “Bigs” didn’t complain about doing this but it was also teaching them what it is like to be a teacher/facilitator on the other end. They realized that all that back talk when you are trying to teach is frustrating and that none of them want to become teachers!!
Let’s be realistic school is not the place that it once used to be. Children should be thriving, learning and growing without a care in the world while at school. Times have changed and there seem to be many more obstacles for children while in school. Many times their troubles stem from their home lives that carry over to their school day. Every child has a story of what their home life is like so we must always be empathetic to everyone. In addition to preparing our children for their academics we must in still some life skills to them as well.
Basic skills like:
1) Always being aware of their surroundings
2) Everyone is not your friend
3) Pack your own lunch and bring a water bottle daily
4) Be a good listener even when you don’t want to listen
These would be my four this year that across all grade levels I will instill in them for a successful school year. I will take a deeper look into these next week but I really wanted to get you as parents thinking about your role in your child’s upcoming school year. It is so easy to want them back in school but how are we equipping them to succeed throughout the school year and in their daily lives!
So here’s to the start of a Fantastic school year for you and your children! This school year is about the success of each of my children both academically as well as personally! Think about your four what/how will or are you equipping your child(ren) for a successful school year!
